The development of the use of electric bicycles

In 2020, sales of electrically assisted bicycles experienced very strong growth. They have indeed increased by 29% compared to 2019 and they have contributed to the general growth of the French cycle market.
It is true that in the first quarter there was a halt to the whole chain of bike due to the first confinement. But from the month of May, the restart was supported by various actions including the campaign "Cycling is my barrier gesture", the "Bike boost" and the development of new lanes and cycle paths.

The e-bike boom in 2020

Last year was indeed marked by a strong enthusiasm of the French for electric bikes. The sector experienced a strong increase in turnover, since the latter reached 3,021 billion euros. Apart from that, the country is also witnessing an increase in the average selling price to 717 euros, or +25%.
According to 2020 reports, e-bikes alone made more than half of the total turnover and their sales reached 514 units, or +672% compared to the year 29. That being said , the year 2019 can therefore be considered as an exceptional year driven by the explosion in the use of electric bike.

The most popular e-bikes with consumers

The sharp increase in the average purchase price of an e-bike justifies the fact that buyers are now interested in quality, performance and the level ofequipment of this kind of bike.
Most consumers prefer, in fact, city bikes for daily use and with the comfort of finding a charging point. But many cyclists also appreciate mountain bikes and hybrid bikes. The models least popular with users are urban electric bikes and folding electric bikes. On the contrary, the VAE road and bikes cargo are used more and more.

What about 2021 and the years to come?

Given this boom of the electric bike, it is sure and certain that its purchase and use will be even stronger this year. Not only does the VAE have a great margin of progress in France, on the other hand it has a length in advance compared to other countries.
Specialists estimate that it will be able to continue to evolve in this direction to reach a penetration rate of around 40% by 2025. If French companies manage to sell up to 2,5 million pedelecs, it will even be able reach 60% by 2030.
