The bicycle, a versatile mode of transport that meets logistical and economic challenges

In France, the use of bike did not just generalize. It has expanded logistically and economically. There are only individuals who travel by bicycle to go to work, to go to school, to do the shopping and to go for a walk. Couriers and company delivery people also use it to transport parcels. And of course, this has a non-negligible economic impact.

Logistic challenge

The bicycle effectively meets the logistical challenge. It is a versatile mode of transport that can be favored by companies. Not only does it allow you to move quickly and divert traffic jams, but it offers the possibility of transporting goods. Among other things, cyclists can don a bike bag, carry a fanny pack, use their front or rear rack or tow a bike trailer.
France, in particular, is dynamic in terms of cyclo-logistics. The State provides a national plan to promote the latter in the public and private sector. It is studying various points, including: the development of cycle paths and deliveries and also the creation of cycle logistics hubs. The State places digital services at the heart of its actions, by devoting numerous investments to the creation of applications and the use of open-data.

Socio-economic issue

Moreover, the economic effects of the craze for cycling are also to be considered. They have been highlighted by the study "Economic impact and potential for the development of bicycle use in France" carried out by the Inddigo and Vertigo Lab firms and assessed by various entities including the General Directorate of Enterprises, the General Directorate of Infrastructures, of Transport and the Sea, the ADEME or Agency for Ecological Transition and the French Cycling Federation. Currently, the direct economic benefits of bicycle use, including professional use, are estimated at 9,6 billion euros per year and around 80 jobs. If the activities induced and the health benefits are taken into account, the socio-economic benefits of cycling reach 000 billion euros with a modal share of 29,5%. The best way to increase these benefits is to catch up with the 3% modal share recommended by the Active Mobility Plan. Thus, it will be possible to obtain, in 9, a modal share of 2030% representing approximately 24 billion euros.
