For about a week, bike repairers have been overwhelmed. Indeed, the Government encourages the practice of bike in several French cities during this phase of deconfinement in order to continue the fight against the spread of the virus. The advantages of using a bicycle on health and the environment are indeed no longer to be proven.
There are also the various aids offered by the Government to encourage people to travel by bicycle, in particular the “Coup de Pouce Vélo” which offers a flat rate of 50 euros to repair their bicycles. Results: many more French people currently use bicycles to get around and many more bicycles need to be repaired.

Traffic jams in repair shops and several weeks of waiting

The cycling craze after the COVID pandemic

Many cycle stores have reopened since last week, but this is not yet enough to anticipate a peak in activity post Covid. Traffic jams occur precisely in repair shops and repairers do not know where to turn all day long.
Some stores even testify that they have four times the clientele they had last year. Others speak of a two-week wait for their customers, whereas before it was only a week or 10 days at the most. Logically, some merchants decide not to make any more appointments given the exceptional situation. This disappoints people and forces them to call several places.

The effect of the “Bike boost”?

Everything suggests that it is the effect of the “Bike boost”. This 20 million euro plan was launched by the Minister for Ecological and Inclusive Transition on the advice of the FUB (French Federation of Bicycle Users) in the perspective of deconfinement and it really worked. According to the repairers' testimony, people looked for their old bicycles in their shed and decided to have them repaired so that they could use them.
The fixed price of 50 euros proposed by the government indeed covers all the costs related to the repair of a bicycle, whether it is the change or the repair of brakes, tires, chain or lights. Thus, users will therefore have nothing to pay as long as their bill does not exceed this amount.
